BCCI History
In 1912, the Maharaja of Patiala sponsored and led the first all-India cricket team to tour England. In 1926, two delegates from the Calcutta Cricket Club attended meetings of the Imperial Cricket Conference in London, the precursor to the current International Cricket Council (ICC).
Although they were not officially representing Indian cricket, Lord Harris, the conference’s chairman, permitted their participation. Following the conference, the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) decided to send a team to India, led by Arthur Gilligan, former captain of England in The Ashes.
During a meeting, Gilligan assured the Maharaja of Patiala and others that if all the promoters of the game in the country united to form a single controlling body, he would advocate for its inclusion in the ICC.
Representatives from Patiala, Delhi, United Provinces, Rajputana, Alwar, Bhopal, Gwalior, Baroda, Kathiawar, Central Provinces, Sindh, and Punjab convened in Delhi on November 21, 1927. On December 10, 1927, a unanimous decision was reached to establish a provisional Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Formally established in December 1928 under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, the BCCI began with six associated associations.
