Definition of Adverb | Grammar

Adverb Definition: An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Additionally, adverbs can also modify prepositions, conjunctions, nouns, pronouns, and entire sentences.

Examples:

  1. She sings beautifully. (modifies the verb “sings”)
  2. The dog barks loudly. (modifies the verb “barks”)
  3. He drives dangerously. (modifies the verb “drives”)
  4. The cake tastes deliciously sweet. (modifies the adjective “sweet”)
  5. She works incredibly hard. (modifies the adverb “hard”)
  6. He arrived surprisingly early. (modifies the adjective “early”)
  7. They spoke softly. (modifies the verb “spoke”)
  8. The flowers smell wonderfully fragrant. (modifies the adverb “fragrant”)
  9. The children played happily. (modifies the verb “played”)
  10. The train arrived unexpectedly late. (modifies the adverb “late”)

Note: Only, even, and at least are adverbs that can modify nouns and pronouns.

Defination Of Adverbs

Adverbs of Time:

These are adverbs that express time-related information.

Examples:

  1. She will meet us tomorrow.
  2. They arrived late for the party.
  3. He left just now.
  4. We finished our homework recently.
  5. I usually wake up early in the morning.

Adverbs of Place: These adverbs indicate location or position.

Examples:

  1. The cat jumped up onto the roof.
  2. Let’s go inside the house.
  3. We walked outside in the garden.
  4. The keys are somewhere in the drawer.
  5. She looked around nervously.

Adverbs of Number: These adverbs denote the number of actions or occurrences.

Examples:

  1. I have only visited Paris once.
  2. She has tried baking a cake twice.
  3. They seldom go out on weekends.
  4. He always arrives at work early.
  5. We rarely see them anymore.

Adverbs of Quantity: These adverbs provide information about the extent, degree, or quantity of an adjective or adverb.

Examples:

  1. The movie was too long.
  2. She is very talented.
  3. He is quite intelligent.
  4. We are fully prepared for the exam.
  5. The food is somewhat spicy.
 

Adverbs of Manner:

These adverbs describe how an action is performed.

Examples:

  1. She sings beautifully.
  2. He walks briskly.
  3. They laughed loudly.
  4. She spoke fluently.
  5. He works diligently.

Adverbs of Reason: These adverbs indicate the cause or reason for something.

Examples:

  1. Therefore, we decided to leave early.
  2. Consequently, the project was delayed.
  3. Hence, she missed her flight.
  4. That’s why he resigned from his job.
  5. Accordingly, we adjusted our plans.

Adverbs of Affirmation or Negation: These adverbs express agreement or disagreement.

Examples:

  1. Surely, he will come to the party.
  2. I do not agree with your decision.
  3. She is by no means ready for the challenge.
  4. Yes, I will attend the meeting.
  5. No, I have not seen him today.

Interrogative Adverbs: These adverbs are used to ask questions.

Examples:

  1. When did you arrive?
  2. Where is the nearest gas station?
  3. How often do you go to the gym?
  4. Why did you leave so early?
  5. How far is the nearest airport?

Relative Adverbs: When an interrogative adverb is used to connect two sentences.

Examples:

  1. This is the place where we first met.
  2. Do you remember the time when we went camping?
  3. That’s the reason why I chose this university.
  4. He showed me the route where the accident occurred.
  5. Can you tell me the reason why he left?
