Why Deepawali or Diwali is celebrated?

This annual festival holds significance for people following Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist religions. Celebrated on the new moon day of Kartik month, Diwali carries unique meanings for each religion. Several stories contribute to the festive spirit:

Joyful Return of Lord Rama: Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, along with Sita and Lakshmana, to Ayodhya after completing 14 years of exile. The residents celebrated their return, marking the inception of the annual Diwali celebration in our country.

Lakshmi Maa’s Birthday: Diwali also marks the birthday of Goddess Lakshmi, who was married to Lord Vishnu on this day. Each year, people celebrate the divine union by illuminating their homes.

Special Day for Sikhs: Guru Amar Das, in Sikhism, declared Diwali as a Red-Letter Day. Sikhs receive blessings from their Guru on this day. Additionally, in 1577, the foundation stone of the Golden Temple in Amritsar was laid on Diwali.

Significant in Jainism: Deepawali holds importance in Jainism as it marks the attainment of Nirvana by Lord Mahavira, the founder of modern Jainism. This day is revered by the Jain community.

Hindu New Year Day: Diwali heralds the beginning of the Hindu business new year. Businessmen initiate new account books and settle their debts, marking a fresh financial start for the year.

Significance (महत्व) of Diwali

The Diwali festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, serving as a powerful reminder that truth and goodness invariably prevail. The worship of Goddess Lakshmi holds immense significance on this day. It is believed that sincere prayers to the Goddess ensure prosperity, eliminating any financial scarcity in the household.

Beyond its spiritual aspects, Diwali plays a crucial role in fostering connections among people. The occasion is marked by the exchange of sweets, a symbolic gesture that not only satiates the sweet tooth but also symbolizes the sharing of love and connectivity through heartfelt Happy Diwali wishes.
