What is the Definition of noun?
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. It encompasses anything we can conceive of, whether tangible or intangible, visible or invisible, countable or uncountable, and includes emotions, among other things.
Examples of nouns include “book,” “table,” “fan,” “car,” “gold,” “college,” “bench,” “queen,” “Rahul,” “rice,” “girl,” “dog,” “marriage,” “humanity,” and “sadness.”
Nouns are integral to language as they represent the building blocks for identifying and naming people, objects, places, concepts, and more. They can be singular or plural, concrete or abstract, and categorized as common or proper. Nouns are foundational to other parts of speech such as verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
Types of Noun
There are especially six types of the noun:-
- Common noun
- Proper noun
- Collective noun
- Abstract noun
- Countable noun
- Uncountable noun
Types of Noun
Common Noun:
A common noun is a general name for a person, place, or thing and is not capitalized unless it begins a sentence.
Examples: dog, girl, pen, chair, boy, car, etc.
Proper Noun:
A proper noun is the specific name of a person, place, or thing and is always capitalized.
Examples: India, Ram, June, Sunday, APJ Abdul Kalam.
Collective Noun:
A collective noun represents a group of people, animals, or things.
Examples: a bunch of grapes, army, family, committee, etc.
Abstract Noun:
An abstract noun is the name of a quality, action, state, or feeling that cannot be perceived by the senses.
Examples: happiness, sadness, honesty, laughter, youth, childhood, etc.
Countable Noun:
A countable noun is a noun that can be counted and has both singular and plural forms.
Examples: book, pen, student, doctor, cat, chair, etc.
Uncountable Noun:
An uncountable noun is a noun that cannot be counted or does not have a plural form.
Examples: water, air, rice, furniture, information, etc.
Noun Number – Singular and Plural The number of a noun refers to whether it is singular or plural.
Singular: A noun is singular when it refers to one person, place, or thing.
Examples: pen, copy, computer, chair, etc.
Plural: A noun is plural when it refers to more than one person or thing.
Examples: men, computers, chairs, copies, etc.
