What is noun and its types
A noun is a linguistic unit that designates a person, place, thing, or idea. Functioning as a part of speech, it serves the purpose of identifying and detailing the subject of a sentence.
Nouns exhibit the characteristics of singularity or plurality and can be categorized into common nouns, denoting general entities, and proper nouns, specifying particular persons, locations, or objects.
What is the Definition of noun?
There are especially six types of the noun:-
- Common noun
- Proper noun
- Collective noun
- Abstract noun
- Countable noun
- Uncountable noun
Common Noun: A common noun refers to a non-specific person, place, or thing and is generally not capitalized, except when it starts a sentence.
Examples: dog, girl, pen, chair, boy, car, etc.
Proper Noun: A proper noun is the specific name given to an individual person, place, or thing. Proper nouns always start with capital letters.
Examples: India, Ram, June, Sunday, and APJ Abdul Kalam. These are proper nouns because they denote specific persons, places, or things.
Collective Noun: A collective noun represents a group of individuals, places, or things.
Abstract Noun: An abstract noun represents qualities, actions, states, or sensations that are intangible and cannot be perceived through the senses.
Examples: happiness, sadness, honesty, laughter, youth, childhood, etc.
Countable Noun: Countable nouns are entities that can be counted as discrete units.
Examples: book, pen, student, doctor, cat, chair, etc.
Uncountable Noun: Uncountable nouns are substances, concepts, or phenomena that cannot be counted as individual units.
Example: water, knowledge, advice, furniture, etc.
Noun number – Singular and Plural
If a noun indicates whether it is singular or plural, it is referred to as its number.
Singular:
- A singular noun refers to one person, place, thing, or idea.
- Examples: pen, copy, computer, chair, etc.
Plural:
- A plural noun refers to more than one person, place, thing, or idea.
- Examples: men, computers, chairs, copies, etc.

Gender in nouns refers to the classification of nouns based on sex. There are four types of gender:
Masculine Gender:
- The noun that denotes the male sex is referred to as masculine gender.
- Examples: boy, father, brother.
Feminine Gender:
- The noun that denotes the female sex is referred to as feminine gender.
- Examples: girl, mother, sister.
Common Gender:
- The noun that does not specify the sex but only indicates a living thing is called common gender.
- Examples: baby, student, professor.
Neuter Gender:
- The noun that denotes a non-living object or thing is called neuter gender.
- Examples: tree, inkpot, pen, table.
Noun and the Case:
The case of a noun indicates its relationship with other words. There are four kinds of cases:
Nominative Case:
- A noun or pronoun that functions as the subject of a verb is placed in the nominative case.
Objective Case:
- A noun or pronoun that functions as the object of a verb is placed in the objective case.
Possessive Case:
- When a noun shows its relation or possession of another noun, it is in the possessive case.
Vocative Case:
- If a noun is called, it is in the vocative case.
