What is the difference between compound and complex sentences

Table of Contents

In grammar, a compound sentence comprises two or more independent clauses. An independent clause, containing a subject and a verb and expressing a complete thought, can stand alone as a complete sentence.

On the other hand, a complex sentence comprises one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. A dependent clause, lacking the ability to convey a complete thought on its own, must be connected to an independent clause to form a coherent sentence.

What is the difference between compound and complex sentences

Here’s an example showcasing the distinction between compound and complex sentences:

Compound sentence: I went to the store, and I bought some milk.

In this sentence, there are two independent clauses: “I went to the store” and “I bought some milk.” These clauses could be split into two distinct sentences.

Complex sentence: I went to the store after completing my homework, which took longer than I expected.

In this sentence, there is one independent clause: “I went to the store.” Additionally, there is one dependent clause: “after I finished my homework, which took longer than I expected.” Since the dependent clause cannot function independently as a complete sentence, it must be linked to the independent clause for coherence.
